(the Cure getting off of the bus in San Diego)

My first show Cure show was in San Diego, USA. On Tuesday September 12, 1989.
It felt like I had to wait a whole lifetime to see them in concert. My friend
Lanya and I went to the show mid afternoon, and hung around the backstage
entrance. She had met Roger the night before at the hotel and had gotten me a
autograph from him. Roger was the first to show up; he arrived in a taxi, he was so
friendly and pleasant. He kindly posed for pictures and signed a few autographs.
About an hour later The Cure tour bus showed up with the rest of the band!
Porl was the first off of the bus then Boris, Simon, Carol (Simon's first wife, she
was pregnant at the time, they were married September 1987), Mary and last but not least
Robert Smith. I could not believe that I had actually just seen The Cure! And the
show was still to come.
We got in to the car to listen to the 91X
interview on the radio, strangely enough it was with Roger and MARY.
It was very funny.
They always used to have a little blurb on the radio from Mary "'Hello your
listening to 91X, This is Mary mad Bob's wife" :) I have the interview on
tape around here somewhere, I will try and find it and type it. (just don't hold
your breath). I wanted Shelleyan Orphan to hurry up and get off of the stage, I
wanted to see The Cure. Unfortunately I am really in love with Shelleyan
Orphan now and I did not get to really appreciate them. But I am so
thankful to Robert for having them be the opening band. I would have never
heard of them.
We had great seats (3rd row center, they cost $150 which was
so much money for a 15 year old without a job to spend on one show - that is why I could not
afford to see the LA show) so I went to the nosebleed seats to give my friend Jessica the poster and
T-Shirt I had bought (I did not want the poster to get crushed up front), on the way back to our seats I
heard the CHIMES! I have never ran so fast in my life!!! I was at the
top of the arena when the lights and bells started. What a grand memory, Seeing the song live
@ Trilogy in 2002 brought back so many wonderful memories. It was just
perfect, I could not have asked for anything else - well except "Faith". We had third row tickets and backstage passes
(Lanya's family owned a record store and had great connections around town) and went to the back
stage area right after the show. We were able to see Roger again, but the rest of
The
Cure had left on the tour bus immediately after the show. Someone asked
Roger sign the 0riginal BDC 7" he could not believe what the back looked like.

The show was absolutely amazing I will never forget... It was the perfect day.
