"This
was at the Miyako Hotel (lobby) in San Francisco. Another girl I knew was doing
an interview, so since she had that set up already, I just did one, too!
(Unfortunately, no idea where that tape is now -- a million years, two
countries, 8 houses and 4 kids ago!) I do remember Go West were staying a
couple blocks away that day, and we went and met them, too. Robert signed
this full page photo from Smash Hits I had -- the blue face makeup they did for
a video I can't remember the name of (inbetween days?). Anyhow, the sig looked
like "rosen," so my friends and I always called him that after that. Lol He came
down about 2 hours late, in mid-afternoon, and had just gotten up.
:-) Now I look back and imagine
how *thrilled* he must have been to get up to go talk to 4 teenage girls. "

And: When we got to the
hotel to try to meet The Cure, there weren’t really any fans around except for
two girls who were going to be interviewing Robert Smith for their high school
paper. We hung out with them for a few hours, as Robert was three hours late for
the interview. When he finally came down at about 5pm, he explained that he had
been sleeping.
He was very friendly, quite sweet and very accommodating — we all wound up
asking him questions and taking photos of and with him. He was a shoegazer in
the truest sense — kept looking at his shoes, my shoes, playing with his
shoelaces…
One quote from the interview: “I am not a musician. A musician is someone who
works all his life to perfect his instrument. I don’t work that hard — I have no
desire to become a musician. I’m just a singer who writes songs and plays a
little guitar.”
